In its second season, WB's smash show about Superman's teen years shucked off freshman insecurities, cutting down on the parade of weekly mutants in favor of longer story arcs. The audience responded positively; and as the show's ratings grew, so to did its Buffy-like legion of fans. Not that Season 2 strayed too far from the winning recipe: Start with teen intrigue that would make Aaron Spelling proud; slowly mix in the revelation of Superman's origins, while paying tribute to the original comic; and pepper liberally with scenes that strip super-hunky star Tom Welling of his plaid shirts. The fascinating story at the core of Smallville's success, though, is the cleverly written descent into darkness of character Lex Luthor, sharply portrayed by Michael Rosenbaum. Is he Supe's friend, driven to eventual evil solely by the machinations of a tyrannical father? Or is he just pure malevolence-in-waiting, ready to take over the world once he's done with the town of Smallville? Season 2 hints at some answers and raises many more questions. Other baddies from this season include a hot-to-trot teacher, two-timing boyfriends, and a kryptonite-enhanced clone. The season's high point, without a doubt, is "Rosetta," the February sweeps episode that features big-screen superman Christopher Reeve as Dr. Virgil Swann, a New York scientist who reveals to Clark the truth about his origin on Krypton. And you thought your sophomore year was eventful.
